1968 The Church Taurmarunui Deconstruction Reconstruction History...
The Church History:
The Church was
originally the Methodist Church from Taumaranui
in the Central North
Island, orginally
built in 1916.
It became unused when the population of
Taumaranui decreased
and locals shared a single Church.
We tendered
for the building and arranged a housemover to relocate it for us.The
housemover failed to do the job,
absconding with our deposit.
Unable
to raise more money, we took 6 friends to Taumaranui and demolished
it, storing it for 3 years before rebuilding it. The local Hahei community supported us through the demolition process providing labour, transport and encouragement.
In reconstruction as much of the original material that was sound
and able to be reused was
-
the trusses,
rafters,
floor,
doors and
windows. The original weatherboards were recycled as skirting boards in our accommodation cottages and the building was reclad with treated pine milled off a block of land in Hahei.
The
resulting building provides a unique and characterful venue for both public
and guest dining and an excellent venue for weddings or special
occasions.
